In 1688 two new biographies of Saint Louis (Louis IX, king of France from 1226 to 1270) were completed in Paris. The appearance of the first, originally sponsored by the educators of the heir to the throne of Louis XIV and composed by the Jansenist Filleau de la Chaise, nearly caused a riot at the bookstore due to the heavy influx of eager buyers. The second, by the cross-dressing abbe de Choisy, was specially commissioned by the Court of Louis XIV to drive the first into oblivion. This thesis explores why such interest arose in Saint Louis in 1688, analyzing these competing biographies as the culmination of the struggle for custody of memory of Saint Louis over the four centuries following his death. The specific choice of author by the various sponsors of each of these 1688 biographies is closely analyzed. We show how the Jansenist was chosen by tracing the long connection of Port-Royal with the veneration and biography of Saint Louis. Consideration of his life and literary and historical works shows that the seemingly surprising choice of the transvestite courtier Choisy was in fact a very natural one under the circumstances."

Three years after South Africa's first nonracial democratic elections, the difficult process of social and economic transformation continues. About one-half of South Africa's 41 million people -- and two-thirds of the African population -- still live in deep poverty. Eight million live in shacks. Land hunger is widespread. Land dispossession caused by colonialism's and apartheid's forced removals and alienation of land and water rights lie at the heart of the repressive regime which the national liberation movement struggled against. In South Africa, land and agrarian reform policy is presently being developed as a top-down exercise increasingly informed by a neo-liberal macroeconomic policy orientation. In the book, this elite driven transition is contrasted with a proposed popular program of radical transformation. The specific role of the World Bank is criticized, and the results of a uniquely participatory research and policy development project recently undertaken in the Eastern Transvaal are presented. The book demonstrates why incorporating extensive knowledge that exists in poor rural areas into development of land and reform policies is essential for truly democratic social and economic transformation. This is an important book that will be useful for policy-makers, academics and the general public alike.

Diese Arbeit hingegen untersucht die Auswirkungen einer Einbringung von Teilen der Olprodukte (Kraft- und Schmierstoffe) selbst. Dabei wurde das bisherige Vorhandensein einschlagiger Daten betrachtet und ausgehend von den Mengen der ausgetretenen und nicht wiedergewonnenen Volumina eine Berechnung und Monetarisierung der dadurch entstehenden Umweltschaden in Form von Sanierungskosten angestrebt. Diese Kosten wurden den Substitutionskosten entgegengestellt, welche durch einen Austausch der bisher ublichen Mineralolprodukte durch biologisch schnell abbaubare Olprodukte, so zum Beispiel den aus Rapsol gewonnenen, entstehen wurden (z.B. Anbaukosten, Umrustkosten fur Fahrzeuge). Eine verstarkte Konzentration erfolgte dabei auf besonders sensible Umweltbereiche, wie zum Beispiel die Land- und Forstwirtschaft sowie die Trinkwassergewinnung. Die Arbeit ist dabei in drei Teile gesplittet. Der erste, theoretische Teil befasst sich mit der Aufzeigung der zur Verfugung stehenden Monetarisierungsmethoden, der Klassifizierung der Mineralolprodukte und deren Absatzsituation sowie der Definition der Schadensfalle und des Umweltverhaltens, der Toxizitat und der biologischen Abbaubarkeit. Der zweite, empirische Teil zeigt die Quantifizierung der Mengen auf, welche ausgetreten sind und welche Teile davon in der Umwelt verblieben. It addresses six core concerns: differential access to geographic information and technology, integration and representation of multiple realities of landscape within a GIS, identification of the potential beneficiaries of participatory GIS projects, development of placed-based methodologies and methods for more inclusive community participation in spatial decision making, situating PPGIS production and implementation in its local political context, and identification of community GIS contributions to geography and GIScience.
